Book Club Meeting Tonight at Petworth Library – 7pm

Based on last Friday’s question of the day (lots of good book recs by the by) it seems as though a book club has formed. Sounds cool.

From the comments:

“I went ahead and reserved the library’s meeting room for you for 7-8:45 on the night of the 29th.

Tony Ross @ Petworth Neighborhood Library”

  • yay! I’m very excited about this!

  • should be good fun… i still have my fingers crossed for a quilting club though…

  • I hope everyone interested will able to make it! If not, send me an email ([email protected]) and I will let you know what happens.

@christopher – the Petworth library has a quilting club, they meet every Saturday at 10:30.

The meeting tonight will be held in the fiction reading room – I’ll be at the front desk and am looking forward to seeing you all:)

  • Hi CHLibrarian — I won’t be able to make it but I’ll email you so you have my info and can fill me in. Thanks!

  • curse you chlibrarian…no one calls my bluff and gets away with it!

ill be at the library sat morning with bells on, fat quarters in hand!

  • I’m glad to hear we have a few people on board for this project. It will be great to meet all of you outside the confines of the interwebs; see you all tonight and dont forget to bring a few book suggestions to get things started.

  • Aww, rats. I would totally come, except I’m single-parenting on Monday nights while my husband works. (And Wednesday nights. And Thursday nights.) I don’t think a pre-literate toddler would add much to the proceedings. Unless Goodnight Moon is on the reading list, of course. If, by chance, you settle on Tuesdays as the eventual bookclub night, I’ll be there!

  • This sounds like fun, but I wil not be able to make it tonight. Will send email..

  • Drats! I missed this. Darn you government workforce tying me to the desk.
    Any success?

  • Yes the book club met at the library last night. We discussed how often we would meet and where. Also we decided on a book. The club is open to new members anytime. We have decided to meet informally on the 1st monday of every month at 7pm-Red Derby to hang out discuss books and whatever, then the 3rd Monday of every month we will meet at the Petworth Library at 7pm. Here we will discuss the book we chose and then pick a new book. So we will be going for a book a month.

The next meeting will be Oct 6th at the Red Derby at 7pm. The book we have chosen is George Pelecanos’ book The Turnaround. (Author of the New York Times Bestseller The Night Gardener and the writer for the HBO show The Wire)

This book is about the night 3 boys drive into an unfamiliar neighborhood and changed 6 lives forever. It takes place in DC over a period of about 40 years.

Hope to see you all at the Red Derby or at the conclusion of this book meeting at the Library.

  • Okay, I just bought the book, but like EE, I suspect I can’t make the meetings due to baby time. It’s great that this idea took off, and that the neighborhood library is involved!

  • CHLibrarian and Flipflopirate are creating a google group for our book club so even if you can’t make the meetings you can join in discussion on the site with others who can’t make the meeting.

  • I recently read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. i won’t be able to attend the book club due to grad school classes on Monday evenings, but I trust you all will like it and its local setting.

  • We picked ‘Turnaround’ in part due to the fact that the author uses Petworth and other DC neighborhoods as the setting for his story, a fitting tribute to the locale and blog which spawned our motley crew of readers.
