Wow, Huge Community Garden In an Alley

DSCN1683, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

As I’ve mentioned before I tend to wander in alleys from time to time because I’m not a normal person. But never mind that. While wandering in an alley behind 10th and Quincy I discovered a huge triangle garden with sunflowers and vegetables. It was gigantic. Do all the folks whose houses abut this giant triangle take care of the garden? It is pretty sweet. And certainly like nothing I’ve ever stumbled upon before.

You should come by in the spring – Earl’s roses in that triangle are astounding.

Yes, the people with houses around it take care of it. I don’t know how they divide it, although I know that has changed over the years as people move, and die, and so on.

That side of the block has a much better alley than the other side of the block – we only have a nasty Safeway parking lot in the back. I am jealous of that side of the block.

When I was rehabbing after surgery this year, I had to walk a lot for physical therapy, so I would go across the street and walk in triangles around that garden. Such a nice alley that is. I which all alleys could be that nice.

  • I walk the dog thru the alleys in Petworth all the time. There are some community gardens, there are also some vacant lots in some of the alleys. It’s amazing.
