I'm going to have to agree, the crowd that DCer says, is not very typical, in fact they're an even smaller minority. The thing is, I also skate and listen to Old Metal, and I was also a Bboy, before all of that, and to be honest the Bboy in me is still very much alive. Bboying is a culture and lifestyle of its own. The dicipline and culture behind is phenomenal! People of all ages and colors are amazed by the progression and admire the work behind it. Just look at dancers like David Elsewhere and tell me that you aren't amazed or at least entertained. That's the widespread phenomenon about breakdancing and B-boying.

Who doesn’t like breakdancing? Ever been to a breakdancing comp DCer? The b-boys, b-girls, and spectators are all ages and all colors. Its global and timeless.

I’m guessing that the heavy metal listening skateboarding kids you’re referring to are white kids. I think the whole idea is giving inner city DC kids another way to be creative. Inner city DC youth are primarily black and they do listen to, and are greatly influenced by, Hip Hop music.

You do make a good point, however, since many of the more serious taggers who graffiti DC property are white suburban youth. However, since they are from the suburbs and not from DC, I think they should be served by their own mural program. This program needs to target inner city DC youth.

And as far as break dancing goes, there has been a serious resurgence among young black and Latino youth. So I’m not sure who you’ve been talking to but obviously not the young urban crowd this program is trying to target.

I don’t like the new murals that I’ve seen and I have real doubts about public art.

I’ve been talking to the young skateboard kids who listen to classic 1970s heavy metal and who make fun of hip hop over the past few weeks. and you know who wants to see breakdancers? old people. white people. not 12 yr old african american kids raised on Guitar Hero.

And until you realize that the kids are rejecting graffiti murals as being something from the older generation then their future reaction over these murals will be a surprise.

I’m not saying that there aren’t many jr high kids who still like rap, but I’ve got some solid explanations from Columbia Heights kids who look at rap as old people’s music and AC/DC as something new.
