I think it is a wicked old school fireman. You probably have to be a fireman to put one of those decorations up though, don’t you think?

  • In colonial days most cities didn’t have public firemen but there were private ones. People who paid these fireman a fee posted plaques like these on their houses so if their was a fire, the firemen knew they were subscribers and put it out. I’m not sure if it was ever in effect here in DC, maybe in Georgetown, I’d say it’s most likely decorative.

  • yeah, i remember watching something on the history channel (i think) about early firefighters. they were pretty much like gangs, and if a fire broke out and one of the guys heard about it, he would go and essentially act like a bouncer, pushing out any rival gangs that tried to put the fire out (to collect the reward) until his team got there with the buckets. im sure there was a lot of arson back in the day because of this…

  • Were you watching the history channel or gangs of ny….jk. 🙂
