This is an Outrage!

No beer before 9 AM? I believe the late great former President Harry S. Truman used to have a shot of whiskey every morning at 8:45 AM and when asked about it, he would reply “It must be noon somewhere”…

  • I actually ran into this a few weeks ago when I worked an all-nighter at the office. On my way home I stopped at Whole Foods to pick up some recovery food for later that afternoon, including a 4 pack of DogFish 60 minute ale. While I didn’t give a crap at that point, the lady checking me out was really apologetic about not letting me buy it and kept her voice all low like I was embarrassed.

  • I don’t mind the 9am rule, but 10pm??? Isn’t that kinda early? I don’t drink all that much, and even less often do I run out and have to buy more, but 10 just seems wrong. Has it always been that early? Or was that new too?

  • Umm… hasn’t that always been the law… I seem to recall there being a sign at the end of the Beet/Wine aisle at Giant for like ever. I know it’s been that way in VA for a while.

  • There was a mom+pop near the nursing home in MtP and the nurses would try to buy beer on the way homeduring swing shifts, like 8am. I saw it at least twice.

  • You used to be able to buy beer, wine, etc. way into 1 or 2am. About 7-8 years ago they changed the cutoff time from 11pm to 10pm.

  • It was August 1 of 2001 when the law went in to effect banning alcohol sales after 10 PM.

  • I am pretty sure that individual stores can be granted an exception to sell until midnight. Too tired to research right now but I’m sure some corner stores can sell later than 10.

  • without looking up confirmation, its 10pm dc wide… used to midnight years ago if i remember correctly.

  • I think the new Giant in Columbia Heights sells until 11pm. At least they have to me…

Heh. I read that sign as “No beef before 9 AM or after 10 PM. That would’ve been a little strange.

  • I have definately purchased alcoholic libations past 10 at the CH giant… stick it to the man giant.

  • In California, bars open at 6 am, and last call is at 2 am. That’s all the same hours for off-premise buying. It was great. You go to the bars until 2. Head to an after hours or 24 hour club, and then at 6 am, hit the bars again. There was a voluntary sale cut off at stores in Oakland at midnight, but it was up to the store owner to decide if it wanted to comply. And yeah, you could buy liquor, beer and wine in grocery stores, corner stores and other places. Oddly, I feel like there are a lot more drunks in DC and yet we have a lot more restrictive laws — coincidence? Probably not.

  • I love Jack’s typo. While I do enjoy root vegetables, it struck me as funny that a supermarket would have an entire aisle devoted to beets and wine. Anyway…
