Another Hideous/Hilarious House

Shutters to think?, originally uploaded by IntangibleArts.

Props all around for this photo. A reader sent me this link from Flickr, so thanks Andrew. And it turns out it is a photo from one of my favorite bloggers and the author of PoP’s Intangible Tales – Intangible Arts who has done his own post on this photo here. The fact that they couldn’t fit all the shutters is just too funny. If I were one to build a house, this is exactly the mistake I would make.

  • Really, really strange – perhaps they are planning to build an attached rowhouse on the let to the left? The door and windows seem way too close to the wall.

  • It’s kind of Georgetown esque. There’s some weird things that happened in those old houses, designed and built by hand in whatever vernacular style happened to be popular. Doors and windows that aren’t quite right. Etc. Windows that break through ceiling moldings. Etc. With better quality windows and a solid paint job (and 200 years), you’ll say “what a quirky old house! so charming!”

I should add that intangible arts reports that the brick is fake.

  • I live a few houses down from this house. I walk by it every day on the way to work. They have been working really hard on it and it’s apparently for sale. Will be interesting to see who buys it, looks like a multi-unit kinda thing.

  • I was so focused on just how hideous the brick was and the ugly concrete combination, that I totally missed the missing shutters. HAHAHAHAHA!!!

  • …and to be fair, I DO prefer to see this, versus the big ugly hole that used to be there. I mean, activity on the block is better than………uh… non-activity.

But every time they make visible progress on this thing, I’m left scratching my head in confusion and making odd little smirky faces at nothing in particular.

  • want to see some more fake brick? Check out 774 Lamont St NW — the wall along the staircase is “real brick veneer”.

  • That single shutter on the left looks silly. Exterior design rule #1…..Even if shutters are only ornamental, they should look functional.

  • Let’s hope the big bad wolf huffs and puffs and blows this away. yuck.

  • p.o.s.

    sad, sad, sad.

    lame, lame, lame.

don’t see too many of those on capitol hill….

but it’s interesting to see this kind of crap going on in petworth.

do you folks do anything about these things, or do you just bitch and moan?

What’s up with the attitude there?

  • you have such an amazing neighborhood!

these kinds of vulgarities should not be tolerated.

    that’s all.
